Report from the Groundbreaking Ceremony

Under an overcast sky earlier today, the U.S. World War One Centennial Commission, the US Foundation for the Commemoration of the World Wars and their key partners broke ground for the National World War One Memorial at Pershing Park, on Pennsylvania Ave. in Washington, DC. Memorials to the Missing: Pozières (Australians on the Somme)

The Pozières Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) Memorial to the Missing is located on the Somme Battlefield in France near the village of the same name, about a mile from the massive Thiepval Memorial and a quarter mile from the Lochnagar Crater.

The Battle of Pozières was a part of a forty-one day action wherein the British Fourth Army tried to flank the German strongpoint at Thiepval. The Australian 1st Division, recently arrived in France after heroic service at Gallipoli, was tasked with capturing the defenses at Pozières which included a bunker complex that the British mapmakers called ‘Gibraltar’ and the nearby windmill on the highest point, Hill 160, which the Germans had also fortified. more

Turner Classic WWI Movies for November

Turner Classic Movies is serving up five World War I-themed movies during the month of November.

First up on November 8th is The Shopworn Angel (1938), a story about a showgirl who gives up life in the fast lane for a young soldier on his way to fight in the Great War.  Stars Margaret Sullavan, James Stewart, and Walter Pidgeon.  Airs at 12:45 p.m. Central. more

C-SPAN3, November 4

There is just one WWI program on C-SPAN3 this weekend, but it’s big–three and a half hour live coverage of the “1917: America Joins the Fight” symposium at the National World War I Museum and Memorial in Kansas City.  Coverage begins at 8:30 a.m. Central.  Speakers should include David Stephenson, Jennifer Keene, and Michael Neiberg. more
