The special exhibit, Captured: The Extraordinary Adventures of Colonel Hughes opens with a family event. The exhibit, which marks the 100th anniversary of World War I, honors the commitment of all our soldiers, past and present. Many of the activities will be free. At this special event all active military personnel and their families will receive free Museum admission.

11 a.m. – In the Colonel’s Footsteps: Then & Now Photographs of World War I, by Michelle Kauffman, member of Colonel Hughes’ family, Museum classrooms

12 – 2 p.m. – 35th Division Military Band, Plaza

1:30 p.m. Genealogy with Military Records, by staff members, History Lab

2 p.m. – In the Colonel’s Footsteps: Then & Now Photographs of World War I, by Michelle Kauffman, member of Colonel Hughes’ family, Museum classrooms

The History Lab will offer special collecting activities and provide tips to access veteran’s military and war records.

The event includes these highlights, plus many additional activities.

  • Artillery equipment from the Kansas Army National Guard
  • Climbing wall
  • Obstacle course
  • Joust pit
  • Food trucks, including Taqueria Mexico Lindo; Hot Dog Dude; and Churn of the Century

During this 100th anniversary of World War I, KSHS presents this man and the world events that impacted the lives of so many Kansans.

Adrienne Landry Dunavin is a member of the Kansas WWI Centennial Commemoration Committee and is the primary administrator of KansasWW1.org. She worked at the KU Center for Russian, East European & Eurasian Studies as their Outreach Coordinator from 2010-2016. During that time she served on the KU WWI Centennial Commemoration Working Group. She continues to volunteer as a representative for CREES and KU WWI on this blog.
